How it all Began

 
 
 

I started farming in 2004. In 2008, my mother in law bought our first two dairy does as Christmas presents for my daughters. At that time I was growing 4 acres of vegetables, we had 200 chickens and 10 pigs. The goats multiplied every year and our 2 goats had become a real herd. By 2013, I had a lot of everything and decided I had to focus on the future of our farm.

After a lot of thought and prayers and a course in Holistic Management, I decided to build a dairy and leave the other farming enterprises behind. This was a huge leap of faith because it took a large investment that required a loan from the bank. I knew if I took that step, I could not afford to fail.

We had a good size Nubian herd and now the question was what could we do with their milk as a farming enterprise that could pay back the bank loan and sustain our family. At that time there were 5 farms in Greater Houston making cheese with Nubian milk. I knew every one of those folks by their first name and I didn’t want to step into the market and take their customers.

We thought about many other dairy products and landed on confection. Nubians have high butterfat milk and it seemed that if any goat milk could make an amazing sweet treat it would be the milk of the goats we already owned.

Our breed of goats were chosen by our kids because Nubian babies have irresistibly long ears! Yet it seems like our product chose us because my two little girls both love ice cream.

Along the way we were given a doe who was a cross breed. Jinx was half Nubian and half Lamancha. She had cute little elf ears, but the Nubians picked on her because she didn’t look the same. Jinx was strong and smart and she grew to run the herd. She would become the boss of her bullies. I fell in love with this goat, she made an amazing amount of milk in her lifetime, and she led us to the Lamancha breed as well. These two breeds, and the many crosses between them, exceed expectations in terms of quality and creaminess. My goats are what make my product unique and delicious.
